The literature: Donna Tartt’s THE GOLDFINCH

The libation: Carel Fabritius surely never could have foreseen that, three and a half centuries after it was painted, his image of a goldfinch would be the subject of one of the year’s most anticipated novels. But if he had known, we like to think he’d have celebrated with a toast of genever, that traditional juniper-flavored Dutch liquor. Proost, Carel.
